Rosengarten
Manuscript excerpt from the final part
Audio drama
for narrator (male or female), music box and electronic sounds (1977)
"An inner monologue whose theme is the border areas between reality and the perception of reality is the textual basis of the composition Rosengarten.
Seven groups of sentence fragments illuminate this range of themes in various stations, some of which correspond to stations of the Passion. The groups are interwoven with one another, creating new, overarching connections. Seven individual compositions written for a punched-card-controlled diatonic music box counterpoint the text, which again and again eludes itself anew. In the electronic music of the final part, the state of suspension is broken." (K.D. 1978)
Rosengarten was produced by the WDR in 1978 with Ursula Cantieni as narrator under the direction and with the participation of the composer. The composition was performed live in this line-up in Essen and Cologne. The title alludes to the song "I never promised you a rosegarden".
Klaus Damm presented a facsimile edition of the manuscript in his edition xsynart at the 2004 Frankfurt Book Fair.
